Fun Facts About the 2022 Toyota Camry

May 11th, 2022 by

The Camry is famous for its reliability, a reputation it has maintained for more than three decades. And although there are few surprises in what this family car can do, that didn’t stop us from digging into the data and coming up with five things you may not know about this sedan.

Fun Fact 1: It Is a Legitimate Sport Sedan

Toyota offers a sport-tuned version of the Camry called the TRD. And it’s not just a marketing ploy. The TRD version of the Camry is 1.1 inches longer than the standard model, and it comes with a lower and stiffer suspension setup, a limited-slip differential, and bigger disc brakes than the classic car.

It’s even surprisingly quick: With only 176 hp, the TRD is only a tenth of a second slower than the V6 model in a straight line, and it’s quicker to 60 mph than all but the top two versions of the V6. It’s also a good handler, with a 0.81 g skidpad rating and a 0.82 g figure in the lane-change test. It’s not a true sports sedan, but the TRD keeps up with the best family cars on the market.

Fun Fact 2: It Has More Standard Horsepower Than an Audi A4

The basic Camry comes with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that uses a single variable-valve timing system to produce 178 hp. That’s more than some entry-level luxury sedans such as the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and it’s just three hp less than the base engine in the Acura TLX. It’s also a bit more potent than the V6 in the Nissan Maxima, rated at 175 hp.

However, the Camry’s four-cylinder engine is tuned to be more efficient than its competitors, so it generates peak torque at a relatively low rpm of 4,500 rpm. That means the 2.5-litre doesn’t feel as powerful as it is. It’s perfect for accelerating up to freeway speeds, but it lacks the guts to push the car hard on the highway.

Fun Fact 3: You Can Use Amazon Alexa to Start the 2022 Toyota Camry

Camry drivers may not be impressed with their car’s performance, but they’ll probably be impressed with the technology they get. The standard infotainment system includes CarPlay and Android Auto, and it is upgradable to add a deeper level of functionality.

Available technology has a head-up display, pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. The Camry’s screens are more intuitive to use than the screens in some luxury cars, and they respond quickly to inputs.

Fun Fact 4: The Camry Hybrid LE Is As Efficient As a Toyota Prius LE

Many people assume that the Camry Hybrid would be slow, but it’s not. It has an EPA fuel economy rating of 44 mpg combined, making it just as efficient as the Toyota Prius LE but with a far more comfortable interior.

On the flip side, the Camry Hybrid isn’t as quick as its non-hybrid siblings, taking 10.2 seconds to reach 60 mph. That’s 0.6 seconds slower than the standard Camry LE and 0.7 seconds slower than the Camry LE V6. However, premium buyers can get their Camry Hybrid with an optional two-motor hybrid system that is even quicker than the V6 model.

Conclusion

The Toyota Camry has been one of the segment’s most popular entries for more than 30 years, and it’s likely to remain so with the arrival of the completely redesigned 2022 model. This new car is available in various grades and engine choices, and it will come in a wide range of trims. Even without the sporty TRD, it’s one of the more fun family cars.
